About the NUVOPOS system

The world’s easiest point of sales system with seamless bitcoin integration.
October 18th 2013, Groningen, The Netherlands.

The NUVOPOS system follows three steps: first, the bartender, chooses Bitcoins as means of payment. On a screen at the customer’s side of the bar, a receipt including a QR code appears. After the customer scans the code and confirms the payment with his Bitcoin Wallet, the transaction is completed within a few seconds.

In case a Bitcoin payment is requested, the app sends the wallet name of the customer together with the Bitcoin addresses of the bar or restaurant owner and the check amount to the NUVOPOS cloud server. The server then verifies the data and makes the calculation between the amount in the specific currency and Bitcoins. The NUVOPOS app runs on all mobile devices, including iOS, Android and Windows Phone.

In addition to the point of sales app, the Dutch company BTC Next introduced the first mobile Bitcoin ATM to top up your Bitcoin account by transferring real money from a bank account. Rutger van Zuidam, founder of, developed the Bitcoin Café event to launch new initiatives using Bitcoin for the public: “We love bringing together forward-thinking entrepreneurs, great music and curious people at inspiring locations. We see new business erupting on the fly, which is very exciting.”

For bar and restaurant owners, Bitcoin transactions become much easier as well. Vitalik Buterin, co-founder and lead writer of Bitcoin Magazine on the launch of the NUVOPOS system: “At this point, pretty much everyone I talk to on the subject of Bitcoin adoption agrees on one thing: that one of the major challenges, if not the single largest challenge, in getting more merchants to accept Bitcoin is that of usability. We need to develop tools to make it easier for merchants to accept Bitcoin and, furthermore, we need to develop tools that actually showcase Bitcoin’s strengths when compared to traditional payment systems.”

According to Buterin, point of sales apps such as NUVOPOS provide a solution: “What other electronic payment medium allows you to go to the customer’s table and process the payment immediately – not taking their credit card and bringing it back two minutes later, but actually immediately, with no hardware except for a generic $200 tablet. The potential that these kinds of technologies can bring for restaurants, coffee shops and in-person payments in general should not be underestimated.”

Bitcoin uses peer-to-peer technology to operate with no central authority or banks; managing transactions and the issuing of bitcoins is carried out collectively by the network. Bitcoin is open-source; its design is public, nobody owns or controls Bitcoin and everyone can take part. Through many of its unique properties, Bitcoin allows exciting uses that could not be covered by any previous payment system.

“This bar in the Netherlands lets you pay for your beer with Bitcoins"

"While it isn’t the first Bitcoin POS system or the first in-person payments, it is the first one designed specifically for bars and hospitality. Even better than that, NUVOPOS is available to bars anywhere in the world for consideration now."

“If you’re a Bitcoiner in Groningen, you can now kill your thirst with your favorite cryptocurrency at EMG Faktors. This Dutch bar recently started accepting Bitcoin payments via a new Point of Sale system called NUVOPOS.”

“Netherlands Bar Accepts Bitcoins For Beer"

“With Bitcoin acting as a new form of global currency, these type of systems will likely continue popping up at breakneck speeds.”
